MEET THE TEAM: Diwakar Khanal
09 October 2024
We are thrilled to welcome Diwakar Khanal to the Council team as an Asset Technical Officer – Roads, who started with us on Monday, September 2.
Diwakar holds a Master of Civil Engineering from Central Queensland University and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University, Pulchowk Campus, Nepal. With over two years of experience in civil engineering, he has worked on various road infrastructure, water supply, irrigation and building projects in both the public and private sectors. His experience encompasses detailed engineering surveys, design and project management, ensuring compliance with local regulations and successfully delivering key projects.
Let’s learn a little more about Diwakar and what he’s loving about his role so far:
Welcome to the Council team, Diwakar! How long have you been with Council now, and what led you to apply for your current role?
I have been with Warren Shire Council just over a month now. I was drawn to the role of Asset Technical Officer - Roads because it aligned perfectly with my background in civil engineering and transportation. The opportunity to work on projects that directly impact the community's infrastructure, especially in roads, was a key motivator. I wanted to be part of a team that plays a vital role in maintaining and improving public assets, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency.
What's your favourite part of your job so far?
My favourite part of the job is seeing the real impact of our work. Whether it's inspecting assets or coordinating with different teams to address infrastructure needs, it feels great to help in improving the roads and facilities that people use every day. I also enjoy the collaborative environment at the Council, where everyone is genuinely passionate about making a difference in the community.
What does a usual day look like in your role?
A typical day involves a mix of fieldwork and office tasks. In the field, I conduct asset inspections, ensuring that our roads and infrastructure are up to standard and identifying any areas that need maintenance or improvement. Back in the office, I analyse data, make the inspection reports, collaborate with other team members of the departments, and work on reports and planning to support ongoing projects. Each day is different, which keeps the job dynamic and engaging.
What is one superpower you wish you had?
If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to instantly solve complex problems. Whether it’s figuring out the best design for a road or finding a solution to a logistical challenge, having the power to make quick and effective decisions would make everything run so much smoother.
What is your idea of a perfect day?
My idea of a perfect day would be one where everything comes together smoothly. Starting with a productive morning in the field, where all inspections go well, followed by a collaborative team meeting where we finalise plans for upcoming projects. Wrapping up the day with some time to reflect on the progress made and maybe even catching a sunset in the open spaces and playing Tennis.
Tell us the best piece of advice you have ever been given, either personally or professionally.
The best advice I’ve ever received is to "focus on progress, not perfection." It’s important to remember that challenges are a part of any journey, and the key is to never give up. Instead of striving for perfection all the time, the goal should be continuous learning and improvement. Every step forward, no matter how small, contributes to long-term success. This mindset has helped me tackle complex projects and keep moving forward, even when things don’t go perfectly. As long as you keep learning and pushing yourself, progress will always come.
What is something people might not know about you?
Something people might not know about me is that I have a deep passion for outdoor activities, particularly hiking and exploring nature. I find that being in nature not only refreshes my mind but also inspires my work. Additionally, I love watching sports, which keeps me engaged and connected to the community. Whether it’s football, cricket, tennis or local events, I enjoy the excitement and camaraderie that sports bring. This blend of interests motivates me to enjoy the vibrant culture around me while also advocating for eco-friendly practices in our infrastructure projects.
What do you enjoy most about calling Warren Shire home?
I love the sense of community here in Warren Shire. It’s a place where people know and support each other, and there’s a real appreciation for the land and lifestyle. The wide-open spaces and peaceful surroundings make it a great place to live and work, especially when you enjoy the outdoors as much as I do.
